This artwork, The Nikkō Highway, was created by Kawase Hasui (1883–1957), one of Japan's most celebrated masters of Shin-hanga—the modern revival of traditional Japanese woodblock printing.
Hasui was deeply fascinated by Japan's changing landscapes and disappearing traditions. Rather than simply depicting a road, he captures a feeling: the quiet rhythm of travel, the stillness of nature, and the beauty of everyday life far from the city.
The figures walking along the highway appear small against the vast landscape, inviting us to imagine the journey beyond the image itself.
Through his delicate use of light, color, and atmosphere, Hasui transforms an ordinary road into something timeless.
A quiet reminder that sometimes, the journey itself is the destination.
